College can be a challenging undertaking. Unfortunately, some students believe their disability is an insurmountable obstacle that will lessen their odds of achieving success at the college or university level. Some even feel their disability will detract from the overall collegiate experience. The Disability Services Office at NC State University has produced an informational DVD to put common misconceptions like those to rest. The five minute closed captioned video features two students with learning disabilities It explains how accommodations can be different in college compared to what students have in high school. It describes how one discloses a disability at the college level including the importance of knowing what the disability is, how it impacts the student, and what accommodations have worked well in the past. Additionally it stresses the importance of long term planning, online searching, and on campus visits. Preparing students with disabilities for postsecondary education is a significant endeavor. College is an all-inclusive cruise. For those of you that have not been on a cruise ship, let me first say that you are not missing out. It may seem cool to fall asleep leaving Barcelona and wake up on the French Riviera, but the novelty quickly wears off when you realize that you don’t get to experience the full culture of a city since you have to get back on the ship at 5pm and can’t see the city at night; which is arguably where the majority of culture is. Of course, this depends on the city. Another aspect of a cruise is the emphasis on leisure, on sleeping in, watching movies on the Lido deck, eating at the buffet at anytime, getting the all inclusive drinks package to walk around the ship drunk whenever you want to. While college may not be a 100,000 ton behemoth moving through the ocean at 25 knots, the lifestyle is largely the same. In college, many classes don’t start until 11am. In college you can eat whenever you want at the on-campus dining options. In college you can get drunk at anytime of day since you have no reason to leave campus and no reason to be focused. In college watching movies and living the “college experience” is given more importance than maintaining grades. With this in mind, college is an all-inclusive cruise that occasionally requires you to take some adderral during mid-terms and finals. Everything else is fun all day, every day. Want to take a weekend road trip, every weekend? Go for it! You can skip class Friday and Monday. Bored since you have nothing to do and your classes are too easy due to the large influx of students that should not even be in college? Need more money for narcotics and alcohol? Just take more out of your student loans! Your psychology degree will never pay for it so you might as well enjoy the decline! Obviously there are many college students who do not live the same lifestyle, but the majority of students do. And this trend will only be increasing. As the world promotes the old views of higher education as a necessity for life, more kids with other peoples’ money will flood through college gates around the world. What 18 year-old wouldn’t want 4 or more years away from their parents with an endless budget for novel fun? Unfortunately, college is the second largest financial decision in most people’s entire lives, second only to buying a house. With this in mind, it is absurd to ask a 17-year-old in high school to make that decision. Most people see college as a ticket to the good life, a way to be successful. But according to the laws of economics, the supply of college graduates is far to high for their demand. This is why so many college graduates are under-employed. Meaning that they may be employed, but they are not using their degree for their employment. For example, a college graduate may have a degree in history, but is instead working at Starbucks making frappucinos for minimum wage. I know I am a bit harsh about college, but unless you need a degree to do what you want to do, as in engineering or law, then you don’t need college. And even if you must go to college, make sure you do not take it as most students do, treating every single day as if they are on an all-inclusive cruise.
